Things have changed dramatically in the past decade or so and formerly illicit drugs are not just legal now but offer new avenues for “legitimate” investment. But it’s not just companies that are primarily engaged in the manufacturing and sale of cannabis that are off limits. The USCCB guidelines also forbid companies that deal primarily with tobacco and gambling. All three of these types of business are off limits because their main offering leads to addiction. It’s important to note at this juncture that the Church is careful to say that gambling is not, in itself, objectionable. Rather, the Church appears to be attempting to distance itself from what can be a near occasion of sin for many.
Better than Simply Treating Symptoms, We Prevent the Disease
In keeping with the Church’s dual requirement of avoiding evil and doing good, we undertake activities beyond filtering out specific stocks. We donate a portion of our fees to fund advocacy initiatives aimed at promoting the common good. We have experienced many successes in our advocacy efforts so far, and are continuing the work of the New Evangelization by bringing the light of the Gospel to corporate America.
