Human Cloning Not Allowed for Catholic Investors

Cloning Humans Is Not an Admissible Way to Clone Dollars

“Human cloning is intrinsically evil because it reduces human procreation to a mere manufacturing process, producing new human beings in the laboratory to predetermined specifications as though they were commodities.”USCCB Investing Guidelines

Closely tied to the Church’s position on abortion and contraception, the Church is morally opposed to human cloning and, for similar reasons, in vitro fertilization. Naturally, then, the Church is also opposed to making money from human cloning. The prohibition actually extends beyond laboratory research. The Church forbids investing in companies actively engaged in researching human cloning as well as those that offer any products or services based on cloning.

Faithful Catholic investors must avoid supporting efforts to clone human

s or profit from it.

When the original USCCB guidelines were issued, they didn’t include a moratorium on investing in cloning for the simple reason that cloning wasn’t possible at the time. We, however, have been screening out cloning companies for years, based on the public, consistent Church teaching against cloning in general.

Slowing the Reproduction of Evil with Catholic Investments

The USCCB asks investors to do two things: avoid investing in evil and actively promote good. The way we and our investors put the second half of this requirement into action is through advocacy work. Our advocacy work takes place at no cost to our clients and consists of targeted efforts to change corporate policies.

The advocacy we have already undertaken has shown great fruit in the promotion of a Culture of Life.

Human cloning is a clear affront to human dignity and is contrary to the moral law. It is great to see the Church updating its investment guidelines to exclude cloning from faithful portfolios. While this addition will not, by itself, actually end cloning or in vitro fertilization, it is a great step forward in our efforts to stop this practice.
