Investing in a Lions’ Den
October 25, 2017 8:07 pm“For He is the living God
and He endures forever;
His kingdom will not be destroyed,
His dominion will never end.
27 He rescues and He saves;
He performs signs and wonders
in the heavens and on the earth.
He has rescued Daniel
from the power of the lions.”
– Daniel 6:26-27
From the time we are small children, Catholics are well-versed in the story of Daniel and the Lions’ Den. It serves as a lesson for Christians to cling to their faith above all else in times of uncertainty and strife, because the love of our Savior protects us eternally. However, understanding the main point of a Bible story and practicing it in our daily lives is easier said than done for most people struggling between financial anxiety and their love for Christ. When it comes to making Christ-like investment decisions, Catholics should know that their assurance of long-term security is founded not only in the sixth chapter of a well-known Old Testament book, but also in the performance of the marketplace.
Taking Fear out of Impact Investing
Independently researching investments for a Catholic can feel like navigating a lions’ den; it’s difficult to know which investments are friendly and which ones will bite your head off in the long run, or force you to compromise your moral and ethical principles at the very least. Taking the fear out of impact investing is one of many reasons we at Catholic Investment Strategies developed our Catholic investment products, which follow the USCCB’s guidelines to the letter, in order to make the most out of our earthly gifts and talents without eroding our commitment to the Catholic faith. As a matter of fact, our ethically-sound Catholic portfolios tend to perform at similar levels as non-Catholic investment strategies. Before finalizing the USCCB guidelines, copious market research was conducted to ensure that Catholic investors could both adhere to their faith as well as make the most of their earthly gifts.
This is proof for us as Christians that what God tells us in Daniel chapter six is true: when our faith is unfailing in the face of fear and danger, our Lord protects us and keeps us safe in the palm of His hand. Sticking to our Catholic principles and refraining from investments that support abortion, child labor, or discrimination in the workplace will not result in our financial ruin. We can confidently use our dollars to promote Catholic values around the world, serving as an example of God’s power to the members of our communities, just like Daniel did for the entire Persian Empire.
The next time you sit down and start to plan for your financial future, remember your faith and your commitment to living it fully. Your Father in Heaven won’t leave you high and dry for choosing the path of impact investing for you and your family.
