An Open Letter to Robert Iger
June 3, 2019 4:08 amMr. Robert Iger
Chief Executive Officer
The Walt Disney Company
Dear Mr. Iger:
On May 29th you said, in regard to filming in Georgia if its heartbeat law goes into effect, “I don’t see how it’s practical for us to continue to shoot there.”
I find that statement confusing, as it isn’t obvious how this law will impact Disney’s business in Georgia.
Presumably, the earlier decision to work in Georgia was based on a favorable evaluation of doing business there. Could you explain how this law will have an impact on the profitability of operating in Georgia?
Furthermore, it seems curious that The Walt Disney Company would benefit from taking a stance that would likely alienate a substantial portion of its customer base: families. How would an exit from Georgia due to this law increase the appeal of the company’s offerings to this large constituency?
Your company’s products and services are, in large part, aimed at children. How is taking a stance against a law that would increase the size and growth of this important customer segment benefit shareholders?
Lastly, since Disney operates in countries with similar, if not more stringent, laws, how do you reconcile continued operation in those localities if you are contemplating leaving Georgia?
I look forward to your reply,
Thomas A. Carroll
